Winter Quarter Application

This is a course designed to accommodate particular research interests of individual students. Most students will work on research papers that have some connection with their internships while in Washington, although this is not a requirement. Students will meet both individually and in very small groups with the instructor. Meetings will concentrate on problems of designing, researching, and producing an original paper on a topic of the student's choosing, with advice from the instructor. While there are common elements involved in researching and writing papers, the course is structured as a tutorial, with an emphasis on flexibility in discussing and in helping students with individual research problems.

Students will meet in small tutorial groups every other week or so with the instructor. Furthermore, it is expected that students will consult individually and on a regular basis with the instructor as to their progress.

Students working exclusively with the instructor in Washington will receive credit for the course through the Political Science department. Arrangements have been made with the Sociology, History, English, and Policy Studies departments to have this course count toward departmental requirements; please contact the respective departmental counselors for more information.
