The centerpiece of the program is the Research Development Seminar, Political Science M191DC (cross-listed in Sociology and History). It helps students design, conduct and present an original research project while putting their work into the broader context of empirical research in many disciplines. This eight-unit seminar features group meetings and tutorial sessions related to the student's field placement.

Students use their internship placements to assist in conducting research of their own choosing, guided by UCLA faculty. Throughout the quarter, students consider the strengths and weaknesses of several research methods through a series of readings, observations, and short papers. Students design a research strategy, gather materials, and write a 25-30 page paper. Most students find it useful to research a topic related to the placement they selected. For example, a student interested in political parties might find a field placement at one of the national party committees, or a student interested in Virginia colonial history and politics might opt for a placement at the Smithsonian Institution.

The Research Development Seminar is mandatory for all participants and is cross-listed in the Sociology and History departments. The English and Policy Studies departments will also grant credit for this course; please see an departmental counselor for more information. For other majors, please contact your department's undergraduate counselor for information on having the seminar applied toward degree requirements.
