Application forms may be downloaded or picked up in person. If you would like a copy sent to you, please call or send an e-mail CAPPP at info@cappp.ucla.edu.

Below is a list of the 4 items that must accompany each application. There is also an interview process that each student must go through prior to acceptance.

1. Writing Sample: Attach a short essay (one-page, single spaced) on one area of study you wish to explore in Washington.  In your essay, tell the reader what the problem is that you want to research, and briefly explain why this is an important problem to pursue (or one that’s interesting to you).   Discuss what you think you would need to do to better understand the problem, including what questions you might need to answer, whether your topic is health policy, museum design, political party campaign strategy, urban transportation, bioterrorism, farm subsidies, etc.  At this point, you should identify very generally the kinds of organizations where you’d like to intern, that would be compatible with your research interests.  For instance, if your interest is in environmental policy making, devote a sentence or two to informing the reader that a federal environmental agency, or think tank, or advocacy organization would be an appropriate internship.  Please do not include specific organizations or agencies unless you are using them as examples or possible internships (since your essay may be forward to internship sponsors beyond those you’ve identified).
It’s important to remember that the essay should reflect what interests you.  We’re looking for students with a wide variety of interests, from the social sciences, to the humanities, to the sciences.  The essay is short, so it’s important to express your ideas briefly, but clearly.  This website has a link, Student Research, that contains a select sample of research topics of past CAPPP students.  You may find this helpful.

2. Resume: Submit a one-page resume, highlighting relevant educational and work experiences, special skills such as languages, and any other related experience (political, artistic, research, etc.). Do not include a statement of your career objectives.

3. Letter(s) of Recommendation: Submit at least one letter of recommendation, preferably from a UCLA professor who is familiar with your work. A letter from a professor in your area of interest is best. A letter from a TA is acceptable, though not preferable. All letters must be written on letterhead and addressed, To Whom It May Concern. If chosen to participate in the program, you will be required to have two letters of recommendation to assist in internship placements. We recommend that you secure this second letter as early as possible.
PLEASE NOTE: All letters of recommendation MUST be either sent to CAPPP directly or submitted in a SEALED ENVELOPE. Open letters submitted by the applicant will not be accepted.

4. Transcript: Attach a current copy of your transcript (NOT a DPR), including collegiate work done at universities other than UCLA. The transcript may be an unofficial.

Students will be selected for an interview based on the strength of their paper applications. At the interview, students will be expected to answer general questions pertaining to their academic and professional history, as well as specific questions pertaining to their research interest. More information on the interview will be provided to students who are selected.
